Mrs. Broadside’s Bones

Her husband came in from the hallway and threw that morning’s copy of The New York Post onto the kitchen table.

“Correct me if I’m wrong,” he said, “but that looks an awful lot like you.”

Karynne confirmed it without looking at the paper.

“When did this happen?”

Karynne answered without looking him in the eye.

“For the love of God, why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

Karynne hadn’t thought there’d been anything to tell. She gulped her coffee, glanced at the headline,

“Man, that Bitch Crazy”

and spat her drink out on the Maroon 5 T-shirt Spencer had bought when the band came to town last fall.

“You didn’t think there was anything to tell?” Spencer wiped the stain with one hand. With the other he pointed at the front-page photo, a still of Karynne in midscream, wielding her phone like a .38.
