cold september

tiny cracks in the shades
let too much light into the room
poisoning the darkness
raiding the security

the shades are cold and yellowed
it has become necessary
to raise them before
beating on the windows

falling drifts of leaves
each one a tiny death
the little dogs jump at them
whirling, snapping
