A Kite in the Rain

She cursed Ben Franklin
For flying a kite in
Some long ago rain,
Cursed Thomas Edison
For all his utilities,
Cursed the idea
Of monthly electric bills.
"Life support" is a funny term.
It almost made her laugh,
But she jerked that impulse out -
It was only 120 volts,
Not quite the lightning
Of life and death,
The thunder of natural grief.
Some non-conductive
Papers were signed,
And a doctor pulled the plug.
And she felt the
Electric in the night air,
Perhaps what remained
Of her mother's breath.
