Can't Let Go

Thought I was prepared;
but when you held onto the sink,
my hopes
went down the drain.
Your face turned white as the sheets
swaddling you at
Greenwich Hospital.
Thought I was prepared;
but when your eyes
asked for help
I was helpless;
there was nothing I could do
but bring you back
to Greenwich Hospital.
Thought I was prepared
for losing you
but I can’t let go,
though they’ve said
there’s nothing to do;
I bring you back
to Greenwich Hospital.
