work

we climb slowly
swaying in darkness
up to the fragrance
of bright red lips
to eat at them
until dawn poisons
the horizon
and we must
climb slowly down
and head homeward
careful to avoid
the small brown pellets
left in the rain
to tempt us
crawl to safety
under the rock
of protection
cool against
the heat of day
until darkness returns
and we begin again
our narrow dance
lay down our
silver trails
