When We Were Young

We dove off our boat and
Swam in the green sea,
We read out loud volumes
Of pure poetry:
We climbed the high mountain
And touched the blue sky,
Waved at the wild geese as
They went speeding by,
When we were young, dear Ann,
When we were young.

We picked the sweet cherries
That grew on the trees,
We danced with the daffodils,
Stirred by the breeze;
We sang with the nightingale,
Cooed with the dove,
Slept 'neath the purple stars,
So much in love,
When we were young, dear Ann,
When we were young.

We drank in the beauty of
The moon's pale beams;
We dismissed the scorners
And followed our dreams.
God gave us a baby,
Fond wishes came true.
A child of rare beauty,
An image of you,
When we were young, dear Ann,
When we were young.
