A Single Step

The Blue Hen Diner
through a curtain of rain.
It's neon sign flashes off and on again.
I turn to my waitress,
her teeth as Chiclets laid
neatly in a row.
I order, while figuring
the number of miles to go.
As trucks roll in,
I know even the longest journey begins
with a single step.
So Lao-tzu said,
but does he know
how many will it take
before this sojourn ends?
