The Silk Road
       -- for S. Modell

The way her fingers stutter
in punctuated braille
to read the wounded
displaced the ones
whose knotted tangles
bind them to themselves
in rough and slubbing days
when a thousand exudations
bleed the thread
she twists and weaves
a remedy and pulls
from the hardened shell
imperial dragons
forbidden stitches on a brocade moon
