How does it become a man to behave towards this American government today? I answer, that he cannot without disgrace be associated with it. I cannot for an instant recognize that political organization as my government. —Henry David Thoreau

Bob Powell

Take some bluegrass, mix it with some chopped rockabilly, add a dash of pop-punk, and mix it all together in a folksy weird acoustic electric mixing bowl. Now you are in the mind frame required to fully appreciate the scope of this composer’s repertoire.

Bob Powell has been stuck down the rabbit hole for over twenty five years producing tripped out noises garbled vocal rummagings and serious sweet ballad-like ditties. Hailing from Rochester, NY Powell's journey has taken him through the navy to art and film college and has seen him working as composer for a theatrical group in Chicago. This traveling troubadour now calls Los Angeles his home and spends his days composing and working on other solo projects.

A firm believer in legal file sharing Bob’s anthology is available on his dearly-supported Open Source Audio. Over 60 tracks in all, recorded from 1975 to 2001. He is currently working on a new solo album, "Los Angeles." Curious popsters can check out Bob’s music at his site, www.bobpowell.org, which is worth exploring if only for the blueprint plans for a wooden PC--the affordable computer. Be sure to find his archives, as well.

Bob’s music is weird and wonderful. Bite off a chunk at a time, though, as the sheer volume in the anthology can leave your head spinning. Check back here at Unlikely 2.0 for updates on new releases from Bob in the future. —DG
