Crow Songs

Those crows he chased away
from the garbage yesterday
throw free concerts every
morning from the pepper tree.

He has learned to block them
out. But most days he listens
and he's comforted
by their harsh echoes. He lets

himself enjoy such songs
of ugly beauty and meaning
from the open window.

He likes his coffee strong
when he drinks it in the morning
listening to the crows.
