Beer with a friend

In three days I am meeting up for beer
With my once
best friend

We used to smoke newport lights
in her darkly lit stairwell at 3 am
ashing our cigarettes
on the cracked, green tile floor

We thought we were cool
When we were 16
But we hid our cigarettes
when footsteps padded by

I called her suddenly
My voice coming out of a fog
That lasted a year and a half

When she realized it was me
She made a quiet

choking

sound

I like to think
That rules don’t apply to me
But sometimes spontaneity
can get you in trouble
