Test of My Faith

Walking under train tracks,
I was suddenly surrounded.
All the houses had lawn ornaments
and statues of Jesus and Mary.
Brigid said,
the statues were always stolen;
and she couldn’t imagine taking,
a Mary or Jesus.
Yet one by one,
I’d throw them in the Bronx River
and watch them sink.
Such gaudy ceramics of red and blue.
I figured,
if they were so innocent,
they wouldn’t have floated.
Thereby passing,
the test of my faith.
