Missing
(At the ceremony ending the 9/11 WTC cleanup)

If I were a Martian
who happened upon this place
I would take it as a kind
of lunar landscape.
I would see nothing in it of its origin.

Nothing of burnished eminence.
Nothing of fiery Hell.

Barren and dry
Eviscerated
Powdered
Scoured Scarred
Dredged Pit

The "Bathtub"
Talcked concrete wall
Engirds
And fends off the mighty Hudson.

My brain is encased in concrete.
I have no more imagination.
Even memory is lost.

Where are the cherubs
Kissing the empty air?
