The Capitol Holding Building, Louisville, Kentucky

The architect
Melted ice cream,
Probably rocky road,
And poured it on a chilled cobalt plate,
Then,
As the ice cream congealed
Used a butter knife
To scrape the outline
Of the building.
The thin layers scraped away
Formed the rectangles
Of windows
And the lattice
Of the dome
In relief
Against the background shape,
But so thin
That the entire surface
Is flat against the sky.
