Eight Pixel Paintings, July 2018
Artist Statement
I've been using an app on my phone for a couple years now creating "pixel art." This year I had the idea of creating real paintings of the digital pixel art I was making with my phone. I made my own makeshift stamp and experimented with stamping down the acrylic paint as a precise pattern but it's the imperfections of the individual squares and the simplistic minimal and to the point boldness of each piece that are what's beautiful to me. The average piece is approximately 8.5 by 11 inches. That's 63 squares. Sixty three squares to get my message across to the viewer. Sixty three pieces of a visual machine working as one.
"American painter, sculptor, author, photographer, and filmmaker Justin Aerni has garnered global attention for his thought-provoking artwork that combines satire and iconoclasm while examining the great enigmas of our time. As popular as he is prolific, he has sold over 4,000 paintings worldwide within the past decade, and has published ten books to date." ~Erik Maell
