War, O Yes! Extracts from the reports of Melia

Christmas year three.

Yesterday they hung cowards, traitors and the insane. During any War the number of insane goes through the roof. They hung the cowards, traitors and the insane from lampposts, shop signs, and traffic lights. They used shoelaces, cheese wires, skipping ropes. They lined them up and one by one hung them as though they were decorations. Not one complained, not one objected as being used as an ornament. Two soldiers mooed loudly, repeatedly. The dead have no shoes or boots. One coward had crocodile leather boots. They were the first pair to go missing. One had painted toenails. The color was pink. The pink nails coruscated. We watch the dead swing when we are not fighting. I don’t mean the kind of fighting that happens in a school yard or in a back garden. You do not need to be good with your fists and feet to be good at this fighting.
